The Department of Head and Neck Surgery continues to develop new treatments designed to improve cure rates while preserving appearance and function in patients with head and neck cancers. Our physicians work closely with colleagues from Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Speech Pathology, Oncologic Dentistry, Radiology and Pathology to develop individualized treatment approaches. Our patients benefit from the combined expertise of many senior physicians, who meet weekly for treatment planning conferences. The comprehensive care team includes physician assistants, nurses, nutritionists, social workers, and patient care coordinators, who help patients cope with cancer and the side effects of therapy. The ideal candidate for the Optometrist position will have a Doctorate in Optometry and all of the following: Therapeutic Optometry license by the Texas Optometry Board. Eligible to be granted limited prescriptive authority by the State of Texas. The department is open to new graduates/ SUMMARY Research Liaison between ophthalmology faculty and outside department research teams. Coordinator of case report forms, subjective instruments (questionnaires), patient scheduling, adverse event reporting and recording. Liaison between ophthalmology service and institutional office of protocol research (IRB), compliance, etc. Acts as lead HNS liaison for the submission of all new HNS data review and clinical ophthalmology protocols. Obtains and collects all necessary protocol documents from the Primary Investigator (PI) or study team. Disseminates the protocol documents to the respective research teams and/or HNS Clinical Research Program (CRP) team for internal review, collects the result and assists the PI in responding to any internal review. Assists the ophthalmology service and/or research teams in responding to IRB queries and/or contingencies resulting from the CRC and/or IRB review of the protocol. Acts as the lead contact person regarding communication with the study teams for ophthalmology clinical protocols. Creates templates of necessary forms, spreadsheets, and SOPs for new and revised protocols, as needed. Confirms involvement in research efforts through communicating with research teams in updating Delegation of Authority (DOA) logs to include ophthalmology faculty/staff. Provide CVs and medical licenses to respective research teams. Stays updated on classes offered by Office of Protocol Research. Regularly attends educational seminars and actively seeks advice from the Office of Protocol Research (OPR) staff regarding the regulatory aspects of protocols at MDACC. Attends appropriate and/or required conferences. Patient Care - Direct Provide advanced patient care in a clinical setting, to include evaluation of new patients, existing patients, and inpatients; to provide immediate preoperative and postoperative assessment of patients. Perform routine patient care and advanced technical studies in a clinical setting to include but not limited to: Epilation of lashes Placement of punctal plugs Appropriate wound care management Tarsorrhaphy removal Corneal & conjunctival scraping / culture First assist in Operating Room Patient Care - Indirect Provide counseling and education (including surgical consent) to the patient and their family concerning their health care and sensitive ethical situations. Provide a direct link from the supervising physician to other physicians/departments to facilitate optimal patient care and timeliness of appropriate care. Provide a contact for patients, families, referring physicians, pharmacists, and other allied health personnel concerning the immediate and long term patient care plans. Review all diagnostic testing on consultative and primary ophthalmic patients. Process correspondence with patients, physicians, third party carriers and other entities as delegated by the supervising physician. Assist supervising physician with routine chart follow-ups and order appropriate referrals, laboratory, radiological or supportive care as needed. Assist with and maintain patient records in compliance with UTMDACC guidelines. EDUCATION Required:Doctorate of Optometry.
